What does the research demonstrate?
About Therapeutic Laser Therapy Public demand for this revolutionary pain relief has made laser therapy a super star in the medical and therapy treatment profession because of the amazing results reported by patients. The K-Laser is the next generation of laser therapy. This innovative laser technology synchronizes high power dual wavelength infrared lasers in a single beam. The combined wavelengths expand the therapeutic value of the laser for the reduction of edema, inflammation and pain. There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally, one feels mild, soothing warmth or tingling. Areas of pain or inflammation may be sensitive briefly before pain reductions. Acute conditions may be treated daily, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2 to 3 times a week tapering to once a week and once every other week, with improvement. During more than 20 years of use by healthcare providers all over the world, very few side effects have ever been reported. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may be aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment.
How Laser Therapy Helps Cells Function Properly The biological action caused by the Laser in therapy produces a series of effects on cells as a result of the increased production of ATP. The cell, with its mitochondrions stimulated by the Laser, tends to recharge itself with energy, and therefore, if it is damaged due to inflammatory, traumatic or degenerative causes, it tends to return to its primary physiological function. The application technique of Laser light devices helps activate cell functions, fully re-establish damaged tissues, restoring their functionality after metabolic slow-downs due to immobility, traumas or surgical operations. The most evident beneficial effects are: activation of the microcirculation through increased supply of nutrition, re-equilibrium of the functional balance of disordered areas leading to a more rapid normalization and stimulation of lymphatic circulation. Thousands of studies by many researchers show the biological effects of the Laser when used at a correct energy level. It has, in any event, been established that Laser therapy is neither risky nor invasive, is painless, can be combined with other therapies, and rarely produces side-effects. Considerable scientific documentation is necessary for a new therapy to be accepted by the medical community. Over 25 years of clinical experience, without evidence of any significant side-effects or damage to tissues. The wide ranging fields of application of the Laser, from rehabilitation therapy to sports therapy, and through to aesthetic cosmetic therapy, make this a reliable, recommended means under direct control of licensed health care providers. Cellular Effects of Laser Therapy occurs when a therapeutic laser light interacts with cells, higher ATP levels are produced which then boosts DNA production, this improves cell membrane permeability and initiates the release of nitric oxide. These three events then lead to a cascade of beneficial effects increasing cellular energy and health.
Laser Therapeutic Effects During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.
What is the power of most laser therapy devices on the market? Laser therapy devices are class III lasers or “cold” lasers. Their power ranges are in the range of 5 milliwatts to 500 milliwatts. The K-laser is a high-powered therapy device ranging upto 6000 milliwatts; however, the K-laser is power adjustable from 100 milliwatts to 6000 milliwatts allowing for a wide range of treatment protocols. This power and penetration of the K-Laser system is not attainable with cold laser devices.
How many laser sessions are necessary? Usually ten to fifteen sessions are sufficient to achieve a treatment goal. These sessions may be scheduled at two to three times per week for short duration treatment, or one to two treatments per week with longer treatment protocols.
Are there any safety risks associated with Class IV laser therapy? The Class IV high powered K-Laser is extremely safe. However, it is not used over the eyes due to the sensitivity of the retina; therefore, all patients wear protective safety glasses during the treatment.
Is there any pain or side effects associated with Class IV laser therapy? The K-laser is painless and has no side effects. It is completely safe. During treatment, the patient experiences a gentle warming effect, and at many times a profound feeling of relaxation.
What is its history? The effects of red light on cellular function have been known since 1880 however the clinical benefits were only discovered by accident during laser safety tests in 1967. The first low-power lasers suitable for treating pain became available commercially in the late 1970's and ever since then, laser therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors. Now, after FDA approval in 2001, laser therapy is quickly gaining popularity in the USA. Our patients at OC Back & Body Doctors have seen amazing results with their treatment programs when they supplement their adjustments and physical therapy with K-Laser sessions!
