Sciatica (leg pain)
Sciatica is pain felt emanating from the lower back which radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in your body. It runs from your spinal cord, all the way down the back of legs and into the toes. True sciatica will produce symptoms which extend beyond the back of the knee.
Normally, sciatica affects only one side of the body. Pain radiates down the buttock and into the back of the leg and can range from a tingling sensation to a burning, shooting pain that makes it difficult to find a comfortable position.
Sciatica symptoms may appear from a ruptured intervertebral disk, arthritic changes, inflammation and/or muscle spasms which all indicate the presence of long standing uncorrected subluxations which have resulted in degeneration of the spinal joint structures.
Bed rest has been found to be unsuccessful with sciatica and in some cases interfering with healing. Chiropractic has been shown to help relieve sciatic nerve pain by correcting subluxations through gentle manipulation, thereby taking pressure off of the sciatic nerve
